During the first month of life, breast milk and direct breastfeeding are optimal for your baby. The stool of a breastfed newborn can vary significantly in color, consistency, and frequency. Therefore, parents should not rely solely on the frequency of bowel movements to conclude that the baby has diarrhea. It is far more important to assess the infant's feeding patterns, growth, level of alertness, and any signs of dehydration.
Healthy babies are safest when sleeping on their backs at nighttime and during naps. Side sleeping is not as safe as back sleeping and is not advised.
Babies do not have regular sleep cycles until about 4 months of age. Although newborns sleep about 16 to 17 hours per day, they may only sleep 1 or 2 hours at a time. As babies get older, they need less sleep. However, different babies have different sleep needs.
We'll be the first to admit that going belly up doesn't always seem to agree with all babies. While it seems to vary, we've found that quite a few babies are prone to startling themselves awake from peaceful slumber. That's because all babies are at the whim of their own reflexes—which, by definition, they cannot control—and are born with one particularly inconvenient reflex (the startle, or Moro, reflex).
