During pregnancy, there are some foods you should not eat or only eat in small amounts:
- Some types of cooked fish. While you're pregnant, avoid tilefish, king mackerel, and swordfish. You should limit albacore tuna (but not "ocean tuna") to about one small can a week. These types of fish may have high levels of mercury, which can be harmful during pregnancy.
- Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks and soft drinks. You should limit your daily caffeine intake to less than 200 mg, (about two small cups of brewed coffee)
- Sushi: Raw fish can be harmful during pregnancy.
- Unpasteurized milk and cheese. These foods can cause a listeriosis. Avoid cheeses made from fresh milk.
