The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Phuong Nam Hospital is a specialized unit within the Department of Pediatrics & Neonatology. It is where our dedicated medical team provides comprehensive care for newborns who are critically ill or born prematurely.
What happens in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)?
Caring for a premature or sick newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) involves many specialized procedures. Here is an overview of what you can expect:
First, your baby will be placed in a special bed to help them thrive:
- Incubator: This is an enclosed bed with a clear plastic shell that keeps your baby safe, warm, and at the proper humidity level.
- Radiant Warmer: This is an open bed with an overhead heater to keep your baby warm while allowing for easier access for medical care.
Next, some of the common procedures performed in the NICU include:
-
Close Monitoring of Risks and Complications: Doctors and nurses will carefully monitor your baby around the clock. You may see your baby connected to a monitor by several special wires. These wires are attached to the skin with painless adhesive sensors. The monitor will display your baby's vital signs, including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen level, and blood pressure. Continuous monitoring and frequent examinations throughout the day allow the medical team to assess your baby's condition and their response to treatment.
-
Lab Tests: The healthcare team caring for your baby may perform various tests to ensure the best possible care. These can include blood tests, urine tests, ultrasounds, or X-rays.
-
Medication: Most babies in the NICU will require one or more medications. These can include antibiotics (to treat or prevent infection) or medicines to support their heart or lungs. Some babies will have an intravenous (IV) line—a thin, sterile tube (catheter) placed in a vein. This makes it easier to administer medication and/or nutritional fluids continuously.
-
Other Treatments: Depending on why your baby is in the NICU, they may need other treatments.
- Babies with jaundice will receive phototherapy, where they lie under special lights.
- Babies with breathing problems may be placed on a ventilator, receive Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) through the nose, or be given oxygen therapy.
-
Feeding and Nutrition: Your baby will be fed either through the digestive tract (enteral feeding) and/or intravenously (parenteral nutrition), depending on their condition and ability to tolerate food.
